The PIONIER-Q project is Poland’s official contribution to the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI) initiative, which will ultimately serve as a secure quantum communication infrastructure covering the entire European Union. The main objective of the project is to build the PIONIER-Q network infrastructure, which constitutes the national component of the EuroQCI infrastructure and initiative.
The EuroQCI program, launched in 2019, aims to broadly support the development of quantum communication technologies and the construction of the first quantum communication networks, along with the implementation of a range of potential use cases. On the Polish side, as part of the PIONIER-Q project, the existing fiber-optic infrastructure of the PIONIER network will be utilized. Access to the infrastructure under construction will be made possible by the following components:
  • the backbone infrastructure of quantum key distribution (QKD) systems,
  • metropolitan QKD systems,
  • encryptors.
As part of PIONIER-Q, a backbone of QCI connections will be established between high-performance computing centers in Poland, integrated with the PIONIER network’s conventional telecommunications infrastructure. Use cases for this technology will also be implemented. Another important part of the project is collaboration with potential users of the developed solutions and entities developing quantum communication technology.
Together with them, new scenarios for the application and integration of QKD will be developed, with a particular focus on quantum cryptography, which is one of the most important areas of application for quantum technologies. 

The project is being carried out by a consortium comprising:
  • Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences – Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center (project leader),
  • AGH University of Science and Technology – The Academic Computer Centre CYFRONET AGH,
  • Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling, University of Warsaw,
  • NASK – National Research Institute,
  • Gdańsk University of Technology – Centre of Informatics Tricity Academic Supercomputer and Network,
  • and Wrocław Centre for Networking and Supercomputing.
The main activities on the WCSS side of the project involve the purchase and installation of quantum communication devices based on Quantum Key Distribution technology. The project also includes the purchase of encryption devices and the implementation of use cases for a wide range of users. Training sessions for infrastructure users are also planned.
